Scratchboard Art is a 2-dimensional, subtractive medium that involves the use of abrasive tools to directly remove a surface layer of one value to expose a secondary layer of a contrasting value.
The majority of the values within the artwork are achieved by varying the amount of surface layer that has been removed or left. I use Ampersand Scratchboards, which is a hardwood board coated with a thin layer of Kaolin Porcelain clay, and then layered with Black India ink. I use tools like #11 blade scalpel, brushes, and other abrasive tools, are used to scratch off the black ink revealing the white clay. |
